Things#

What are Things?#

Things are the main interactive parts of your game. They can use either a single Sprite or a series of Sprites for animation. Like the Player, Things always face the camera. You can place multiple instances of a Thing in the game, but they will all be copies of each other, so they will act the same. Make a copy if you want them to look the same, but act differently. Things can block a Player from moving or let the Player walk through them.

TIP: You can use fully transparent Things to make invisible triggers!

If you set a Thing to have a transparent Sprite, you can turn the Thing into an invisible trigger. You can even block the Player from going anywhere until they interact with the Thing.

Thing Editor#

The Thing Editor allows you to edit all the Things in your game. To edit a Thing, just click on it from the Things tab.

You can change the name of the Thing.

CAREFUL! Don’t get Things confused with Sprites that have the same name!

It’s easy to get the names of Things confused up with the names of Sprites! For example, you might have a Sprite called froggy and a Thing called froggy. It’s important to remember that they are two different things!

The Sprites for the Thing will play in a loop, one after another. A new Thing will always use the first Sprite in your Sprites list.

You can make a Thing prevent the Player from walking through it. Click the button with a wall icon to toggle it between “Blocks Player” and “Doesn’t Block Player”.

You can make a Thing look like a Block. Click the button with a Block icon to toggle it between “Looks Like a Block” and “Doesn’t Look Like a Block”. NOTE: It will only look like a Block in Play Mode! This is to prevent confusion between Things and Blocks while editing.

TIP: Making a Thing look like a Block is a great way to make doors!

If you set a Thing to look like a Block, you can make a door Thing that will teleport you somewhere else if you interact with the door Thing. This way it will look like a door Block, but you can assign an Action Sequence to it. (Blocks can’t have Action Sequences.)
